Mediabistro.com is the brainchild of Laurel Touby, a former Business Week staffer and Glamour magazine columnist. In 1993, tired of feeling disconnected from others in her industry and having difficulty meeting media people from other organizations, Touby started throwing a small invite-only mixer at a French bistro in lower Manhattan. Word spread quickly about Touby’s hands-on hostessing style, earning her a reputation as the “doyenne” of the media and creative content crowd. Mediabistro.com is the virtual version of the cocktail party, a place for publishing, television, graphic design, PR, and advertising people to get jobs, share resources, and enjoy a community that until now had not existed. Offline, mediabistro.com now hosts monthly “press club” parties in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, and London.
